रामायण मे वर्णित लिभग सभी राक्षस मायावी रहे है। एक विभीषण को छोडकर। हर कदम पय अपनी माया ठगने का काम करते रहे हैं। लेकिन ईश्वर के आगे हर कोई नत मस्तक हो जाता है।

* रावण*

            रावण एक कुशल राजनीतिज्ञ, सेनापति और वास्तुकला का मर्मज्ञ होने के साथ-साथ ब्रह्मज्ञानी और बहु-विद्याओं का जानकार था। राक्षसों के प्रति उसके लगाव के चलते उसे राक्षसों का मुखिया घोषित कर दिया गया था।

               रावण ने लंका को नए सिरे से बसाकर राक्षस जाति को एकजुट किया और फिर से राक्षस राज कायम किया। उसने लंका को कुबेर से छीना था। उसे मायावी इसलिए कहा जाता था कि वह इंद्रजाल, तंत्र, सम्मोहन और तरह-तरह के जादू जानता था। उसके पास एक ऐसा विमान था, जो अन्य किसी के पास नहीं था। इस सभी के कारण सभी उससे भयभीत रहते थे।

*कालनेमि* 

              कालनेमि राक्षस रावण का विश्वस्त अनुचर था। यह भयंकर मायावी और क्रूर था। इसकी प्रसिद्धि दूर-दूर तक थी। रावण ने इसे एक बहुत ही कठिन काम सौंप दिया था। जब राम-रावण युद्ध में लक्ष्मण को शक्ति लगने से वे बेहोश हो गए थे, तब हनुमान जी तुरंत ही संजीवनी लाने के लिए द्रोणाचल पर्वत चले गये थे।

            हनुमानजी जब द्रोणाचल की ओर चले तो रावण ने उनके मार्ग में विघ्न पैदा करने के लिए कालनेमि को भेजा। कालनेमि ने अपनी मायावी शक्ति से तालाब, मंदिर और सुंदर बगीचा बनाया और वह वहीं एक ऋषि का वेश धारण कर मार्ग में बैठ गया।

          हनुमानजी उस स्थान को देखकर वहां जलपान के लिए रुकने का मन बनाकर जैसे ही तालाब में उतरे तो तालाब में प्रवेश करते ही एक मकरी ने उसी समय हनुमानजी का पैर पकड़ लिया। हनुमानजी ने उसे मार डाला। फिर उन्होंने अपनी पूंछ से कालनेमि को जकड़कर उसका वध कर दिया।
             यह स्थान उत्तर प्रदेश के सुलतानपुर जनपद में स्थित सूरापुर बाजार के दक्षिण 2 किमी की दूरी पर विजेथुआ ग्रामसभा मे विजेथुआ महावीर के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है। इसी प्रसिद्ध हनुमान मन्दिर के सटा हुआ पूरव तरफ मकरी कुण्ड के नाम से तालाब भी स्थित है।

*ताड़का* 

            ताड़का के पिता का नाम सुकेतु यक्ष और पति का नाम सुन्द था। सुन्द एक राक्षस था इसलिए यक्ष होते हुए भी ताड़का राक्षस कहलाई। अगस्त्य मुनि के शाप के चलते इसका सुंदर चेहरा कुरूप हो गया था इसलिए उसने ऋषियों से बदला लेने की ठानी थी। वह आए दिन अपने पुत्रों के साथ मुनियों को सताती रहती थी। अयोध्या के पास स्थित सुंदर वन में अपने पति और दो पुत्रों सुबाहु और मारीच के साथ रहती थी। उसी वन में विश्वामित्र सहित अनेक ऋषि-मुनि तपस्या करते थे। ये सभी राक्षसगण हमेशा उनकी तपस्या में बाधाएं खड़ी करते थे।

              विश्वामित्र एक यज्ञ के दौरान राजा दशरथ से अनुरोध कर एक दिन राम और लक्ष्मण को अपने साथ सुंदर वन ले गए। राम ने ताड़का का और विश्वामित्र के यज्ञ की पूर्णाहूति के दिन सुबाहु का भी वध कर दिया था। राम के बाण से मारीच आहत होकर दूर दक्षिण में समुद्र तट पर जा गिरा।


*मारीच* 

            राम के तीर से बचने के बाद ताड़का पुत्र मारीच ने रावण की शरण ली। मारीच लंका के राजा रावण का मामा था। जब शूर्पणखा ने रावण को अपने अपमान की कथा सुनाई तो रावण ने सीताहरण की योजना बनाई। देवी सीता का हरण करन के लिए रावण से मारीच के कहां कि तुम एक सुंदर हिरण का रूप धारण कर लो, जिसके सींग रत्नमय प्रतीत हो।

           शरीर भी चित्र-विचित्र रत्नों वाला ही प्रतीत हो। ऐसा रूप बनाओ कि सीता मोहित हो जाए। अगर वे मोहित हो गईं तो जरूर वो राम को तुम्हें पकड़ने भेजेंगी। इस दौरान मैं उसे हरकर ले जाऊंगा। मारीच ने रावण के कहे अनुसार ही कार्य किया और रावण अपनी योजना में सफल रहा। इधर राम के बाण से मारीच मारा गया।


*कुंभकर्ण*

               यह रावण का भाई था, जो 6 महीने बाद 1 दिन जागता और भोजन करके फिर सो जाता, क्योंकि इसने ब्रह्माजी से निद्रासन का वरदान मांग लिया था। युद्ध के दौरान किसी तरह कुंभकर्ण को जगाया गया।

               कुंभकर्ण ने युद्ध में अपने विशाल शरीर से वानरों पर प्रहार करना शुरू कर दिया। इससे राम की सेना में हाहाकार मच गया। सेना का मनोबल बढ़ाने के लिए राम ने कुंभकर्ण को युद्ध के लिए ललकारा और भगवान राम के हाथों कुंभकर्ण वीरगति को प्राप्त हुआ।


*कबंध* 

            सीता की खोज में लगे राम-लक्ष्मण को दंडक वन में अचानक एक विचित्र दानव दिखा, जिसका मस्तक और गला नहीं थे। उसकी केवल एक ही आंख ही नजर आ रही थी। वह विशालकाय और भयानक था। उस विचित्र दैत्य का नाम कबंध था। कबंध ने राम-लक्ष्मण को एकसाथ पकड़ लिया।

          राम और लक्ष्मण ने कबंध की दोनों भुजाएं काट डालीं। कबंध ने भूमि पर गिरकर पूछा- आप कौन वीर हैं? परिचय जानकर कबंध बोला- यह मेरा भाग्य है कि आपने मुझे बंधन मुक्त कर दिया। कबंध ने कहा- मैं दनु का पुत्र कबंध बहुत पराक्रमी तथा सुंदर था। राक्षसों जैसी भीषण आकृति बनाकर मैं ऋषियों को डराया करता था इसीलिए मेरा यह हाल हो गया था।


*मेघनाद* 

           मेघदाद को इंद्रजीत भी कहा जाता है, क्योंकि उन्होंने स्वर्ग पर आक्रमण करके उस पर अपना अधिकार जमा लिया था। मेघनाद बहुत ही शक्तिशाली और मायावी था। रावण के पुत्रों में मेघनाद सबसे पराक्रमी था। माना जाता है कि जब इसका जन्म हुआ तब इसने मेघ के समान गर्जना की इसलिए यह मेघनाद कहलाया।

             मेघनाद ने युवावस्था में दैत्यों के गुरु शुक्राचार्य की सहायता से ‘सप्त यज्ञ’ किए थे और शिव के आशीर्वाद से दिव्य रथ, दिव्यास्त्र और तामसी माया प्राप्त की थी। मेघनाथ का वध भगवान लक्ष्मण ने एक दिव्य बाण से किया था। बाण मेघनाद का सिर काटते हुए आकाश में दूर तक लेकर चला गया।

 * Ravana*

             Ravana was a skilled politician, commander and penetrator of architecture, as well as theologian and multi-disciplinary.  Due to his attachment to demons, he was declared the head of demons.



                Ravana united the demon race by resettling Lanka and established the demon rule again.  He had snatched Lanka from Kubera.  He was said to be elusive because he knew Indrajal, Tantra, hypnosis and all kinds of magic.  He had an aircraft that no one else had.  Due to all this, everyone was afraid of him.

 * Kalnami *

               Kalnami was a trusted follower of the demon Ravana.  It was fiercely elusive and cruel.  Its fame was far and wide.  Ravana had given it a very difficult task.  When he became unconscious due to the power of Lakshman in the Rama-Ravana war, Hanuman ji immediately went to Dronachal mountain to bring Sanjeevani.



             When Hanumanji walked towards Dronachal, Ravana sent Kalanemi to create obstacles in his path.  Kalnami built a pond, temple and beautiful garden with his elusive power and he sat there en route as a sage.



           Seeing that place, Hanumanji made up his mind to stop there for refreshment and as soon as he entered the pond, a Makri caught Hanumanji's foot at the same time.  Hanumanji killed him.  Then he stabbed Kalnami with his tail and killed him.

              This place is famous as Vijethua Mahavir in the Vijethua Gram Sabha, 2 km south of Surapur Market, located in the Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.  A pond named Makri Kund is also located on the adjacent east side of this famous Hanuman temple.

 * Tadka *

             Tadka's father's name was Suketu Yaksha and husband's name was Sunda.  Sunda was a demon, so despite being a Yaksha, he was called a Tadka demon.  Due to Agastya Muni's curse, his beautiful face had turned into an ugly one, so he decided to take revenge on the sages.  She used to persecute the sages with her sons on the coming days.  She lived in the beautiful forest near Ayodhya with her husband and two sons Subahu and Marich.  In the same forest, many sages, including Vishwamitra, did penance.  All these demons always created obstacles in their austerity.



               Vishwamitra, during a yajna, requested King Dasaratha to take Rama and Lakshmana to the beautiful forest with him one day.  Rama killed Tadka and Subahu on the day of the complete sacrifice of Vishwamitra's sacrifice.  Marich, hurt by Ram's arrow, fell to the beach in the far south.





 * Maricha *

             Taraka son Marich took refuge of Ravana after Rama's arrow escaped.  Marich was the maternal uncle of King Ravana of Lanka.  When Shurpanakha told the story of his insult to Ravana, Ravana planned for Sitaharan.  To kill Goddess Sita, from Ravana to Maricha, you take the form of a beautiful deer, whose horn appears to be gemstone.

            The body also appears to be of picture-bizarre gems.  Make such a form that Sita becomes fascinated.  If she is fascinated, then she will definitely send Ram to catch you.  In the meantime, I will take her away.  Maricha acted as Ravan said and Ravana was successful in his plan.  Here Marich was killed by Ram's arrow.





 * Kumbhakarna *

                This was the brother of Ravana, who after 6 months would wake up one day and go to sleep again after eating, because he had asked Brahmaji the boon of sleeplessness.  Kumbhakarna was somehow awakened during the war.



                Kumbhakarna started attacking the apes with his huge body in battle.  This created an outcry in Rama's army.  In order to boost the morale of the army, Rama challenged Kumbhakarna to battle and Kumbhakarna Veeragati was received by Lord Rama.





 * Keg *

             Ram-Lakshmana, who was searching for Sita, suddenly saw a strange demon in Dandak forest, whose head and throat were not there.  Only one of his eyes was visible.  He was huge and terrible.  The name of that strange monster was Kabandha.  Kabandha held Rama-Lakshmana together.

           Rama and Lakshmana cut off both the arms of Kabandha.  Kabandha fell to the ground and asked - who are you brave?  Knowing the introduction, he said - It is my fate that you have freed me.  Kabandha said- I was the son of Danu, Kabandha was very powerful and beautiful.  I used to scare the sages by creating a fierce figure like a demon, that's why I had this condition.





 * Meghnad *

            Meghdad is also called Indrajit, because he invaded heaven and asserted his authority over it.  Meghnad was very powerful and elusive.  Meghnad was the most powerful of Ravana's sons.  It is believed that when it was born, it roared like a cloud, so it was called Meghnad.



              Meghnad performed 'Sapta Yajna' in his youth with the help of Shukracharya, the guru of the demons, and received divine chariot, divyastra and Tamasi Maya with the blessings of Shiva.  Meghnath was slaughtered by Lord Lakshmana with a divine arrow.  The arrow went far into the sky, cutting off Meghnad's head.
